We recently acquired a lot of Garmin/Volvo Glass Helm 7616 displays, new in box. Volvo Glass Helm displays are Garmin displays that are factory-programmed with different firmware. It is impossible to convert a Volvo display to a Garmin or vice versa with any sort of software or firmware update, forced at startup, or through a normal software update procedure.

We did update the s/w on all of these Volvo Penta Glass Helm displays for optimal performance as they had been sitting in a warehouse for some time.

The Garmin 7616 and the Volvo Glass Helm are very similar but the Volvo unit has some different icons and some different features than the 7616, we are providing side-by-side photos for some comparison, Garmin 7616 on the left, THIS Volvo 7616 on the right.

You can use Garmin network devices, such as radars, sounder modules, etc with these displays, the only thing that can be done but is not officially recommended is to comingle Garmin displays with Volvo displays. If you do this, some information will still share, but you will get this error message “Mixing Garmin and Volvo Displays on the Garmin marine network is not supported because it may result in unexpected operation.” Non-Volvo engine integration, fuel monitoring, and other NMEA2000 functions may not be present on the Volvo displays.

That being said it is not recommended to put a Volvo Glass Helm in place of a Garmin 7616 unless that 7616 is the only display on the network. However, if you are looking to upgrade an existing set of older Garmin displays, or you are planning a new install, as long as you install these displays only, you will be just fine and it is a great opportunity to get into a 16″ touchscreen display for a bargain price.

We warranty the unit for 90 days, extended warranty may be available for purchase through eBay or may be included with some credit cards. Because these are discontinued and no longer supported by Garmin and/or Volvo, the manufacturer’s warranty and support will not be available.
